General Dentistry Q & A

What is general dentistry?

General dentistry is very wide-ranging; you can think of general dental care as primary care for your mouth, which means it’s absolutely necessary for good health. The main focuses of general dentistry are:

  • Screening for oral health issues, including oral cancers
  • Diagnosing oral health problems like cavities and gum disease
  • Treating illness and disease within the mouth
  • Managing chronic oral health problems
  • Preventing oral health illnesses and diseases

General dentistry encompasses every part of your mouth, including your teeth, gums, and the bones within your jaw. The ultimate goal is to maintain excellent oral health, preserving your teeth whenever possible.

But, if you do develop oral health issues, Dr. Bacopoulou can treat those problems immediately to avoid further complications.

What services does general dentistry include?

The extensive menu of general dentistry services at Carnegie Dental Wellness:

  • Root canals
  • Tooth extractions
  • Sealants
  • Crowns
  • Gum treatment

How often do I need general dentistry?

The frequency of your appointments can vary with your specific oral health issues, needs, and challenges.

If you’re in good oral health, Dr. Bacopoulou usually recommends teeth cleaning and comprehensive oral health evaluations every six months.

If you need fillings, dental crowns, or other treatments to restore your oral health, those appointments are separate from your preventive care. Carnegie Dental Wellness also offers emergency dentistry for situations such as loose crowns, cracked teeth, and lost fillings.

What should I do between general dentistry appointments?

The American Dental Association guidelines recommend brushing your teeth twice a day, two minutes at a time, using a soft-bristled toothbrush. Swap your toothbrush out for a new one every three months or before that time if the brush looks worn.

Floss your teeth daily, and watch out for problems like bleeding gums or blood when you rinse your mouth. If you have these issues, it could be a sign of periodontal disease, so contact Dr. Bacopoulou for help right away.
